Mucoid degeneration of the ligamentum teres
Mucoid degeneration of the ligamentum teres (LT) is a common condition, usually associated with other intraarticular injuries. MR imaging and MR arthrographic findings of mucoid degenerative changes include increased signal intensity of the LT both on T1- and T2-weighted sequences, ligament thickening and irregular contours without focal defects. Mucoid degeneration may be a predisposing factor in the formation of LT ganglion cysts. Mucoid degeneration constitutes the major pitfall in the interpretation of acute LT tears.
The ligamentum teres shares some common features with the ACL. Both ligaments are strong, bundled, and intraarticular. LT and show remarkable molecular homology, suggesting common functional properties. They also have similar biomechanical properties and ultimate load-to-failure ratios. Clinically, both have a poor healing capacity. [ Article ]
