Central disc rupture with synovitis and osteochondral defect of the mandibular condyle( RID8623 )
The disc (meniscus) of the TMJ is a blood cell shaped disc which can rupture centrally. When central tearing occurs, the lateral pterygoid tendon will pull the anterior band of the disc anteriorly and the retrodiscal attachments will hold the posterior band posteriorly resulting in a distracted disc with central defect. The condyle is then exposed to the glenoid eminence and the patient can develop arthrosis as in this case. Add acute synovitis and viola, pain and dysfunction of the TMJ.
